Power and Languages

The constitution of Modernity in the West entailed a set of profound transformations. At least three social movements stand out among those that characterize the formation of the Modern World: the advent of the corporate state, which delimits the context characterized as Old Regime; transformations begun in the seventeenth century and consolidated in the nineteenth century, with the expansion of liberalism and nationalism; and the epistemological changes ratified in the field of Human Sciences in the twentieth century. Such social movements are articulated because they directly affect the ways in which historians choose their themes and objects and conceive the methodological conditions of the discipline of History nowadays, articulating the categories of power and language. The notion that, in social practices, language as a structure exists only as a spoken language and vice versa has articulated the idea that, even at the proper institutional levels, power does not exist as a thing, but as a relation.

Line: Power, Space and Society

Society establishes itself as the methodological foundation indispensable to the proposition of explanatory categories and to the understanding of the dynamics of temporalities in historical research. Society that delimits itself through the approaches and interpretations of the historian, and who assumes the perspective from which they are drawn, without any relevant distinction between the specific field of knowledge that is constituted and the subject that knows it. Designed from that definition of the social field, to society, being investigated from the perspective of historiography, presupposes a specificity of the set of relations and positions that lead to a political and cultural setting, embodied in the experience of subjects, including the researchers. The double aspect of the social framework as an approach category and condition of historical experience justifies and determines the investigations of this line.

Line: Ideas, Languages and Historiography

This line aims at promoting research from three decisive axes, because of the centrality they have acquired. These axes are a great diversity of investigations and have the advantage of forming integrated matrices, while designating relatively autonomous dimensions, allowing substatial inquiries about the boundaries that bind and separate them. Ideas are modalities of representation endowed with meaning and effectiveness, characterized by an effort of elaboration, which distinguishes them from pre-theoretical ideas through which we learn and interact in the world of life. Historiography is understood in this context as the diverse forms by which the groups comprehend themselves in a temporal perspective, registering such perceptions in varied languages as well. On the other hand, language must be seen not only as a communication tool, but also as a tool to prefigure historical reality.

Line: Power, Languages and Institutions

The analysis of the various types of language has led to the need to overcome the dualities between meaning and material dimension, and structures and practices. It should be emphasized that representations do not imply reflections, but inventions: perception and signification occur at the same time and, therefore, the production of meaning is not passive operation. Appropriations are decisive, occurring in the context of shared and socially controlled language structures. The understanding that matter and representation are articulated in a single instance, in which relationships of power are forged, demands that sources are conceived as things, even surpassing the duality between form and content. In addition, modes of representation engender institutions that vary historically and are driven by discursive regimes. Such considerations include both the broad use of the concept - the institution is all that is instituted - as well as more specific uses that refer to the state, law, school, etc.
